A few days ago Jonathan Wieme from Niyona Design Studio and Leather Goods sent me an email about their latest collaboration with a new bike builder, called Kruz Company. It's one of the only 'pro' in Belgium, so that's already special, but as Jonathan see what the're preparing he really believe in these new guys :-) and they're very happy to be their 'saddle' producer!

Miura

The Lamborghini Miura was a sports car produced by Italian automaker Lamborghini between 1966 and 1972. The car is widely considered to have instigated the trend of high performance, two-seater, mid-engined sports cars. At launch, it was the fastest production road car available. The Miura was originally conceived by Lamborghini's engineering team, who designed the car in their spare time against the wishes of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, who showed a preference towards producing powerful yet sedate grand touring cars, rather than the racecar-derived machines produced by local rival Ferrari. When its rolling chassis was presented at the 1965 Turin auto show, and the prototype P400 debuted at the 1966 Geneva show, the car received a stellar reception from showgoers and motoring press alike, who were impressed by Marcello Gandini's sleek styling as well as the car's revolutionary design.

Edi Orioli's 1990 Paris-Daker winning Lucky Explorer Elefant. One of three bikes entered by Cagiva that year (the events 1984-95 were contested), these bikes were designed, built and campaigned by Team Azzalin, with Roberto Azzalin the Team Manager. Entered in the Prototype class (of which 1990 was the last year) these bikes were the equivalent of rally GP machines. The engines were supplied by the Ducati race department and in 1990 were 904cc and featured, amongst other things, magnesium engine covers and a dry sump with the bottom of the crankcases removed and a hand built oil tank fitted in place of the starter motor. This bike has remained in Mr Azzalin's collection since 1990 and is complete apart from the navigation equipment (sourced from an aircraft) and the LH tank decals. Wheelbase 1560mm. Seat height 1000mm. Dry weight 180kg. Total fuel capacity 59lt. Top speed 180kph. Photographed near Varese, Italy. 2013. Team Azzalin collection.

Man of the World

Man of the World is a handbook for the modern man, with its DNA inspired by American Heritage. Like most of us growing up, I really appreciated the appeal of the Hollywood icons of the 1960s and ’70s, guys like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Al Pacino. In today’s marketplace, you rarely find content that caters specifically to men who value style, travel, food, art, and culture. Man of the World is tightly focused on that group; it doesn’t try to be all things to all people. It’s for a sophisticated male niche audience, and it’s somewhere they can go for consistent, compelling, informative content.

ICON is designed by Jonathan Ward. The concept for ICON was born in response to the direction he had seen the collector market heading, as demands and expectations on classic cars grew to expect modern performance married to classic styling. His wife Jamie and him started TLC, the nations leading Land Cruiser Service center in 1996, to provide sales, service, parts and restoration services to the Land Cruiser community.

Carlo Guzzi memorial in the main square of Mandello del Lario. Photographed in Mandello del Lario, Italy. 2013 by Phil Aynsley

The very first Moto Guzzi was the Guzzi-Parodi or "G.P" named after Carlo Guzzi and Giorgio Parodi and was completed in 1920. The horizontal 500cc motor featured an OHC, 4 valve head; twin spark plugs and an impressive (for the time) lubrication system. Despite a low compression ratio of 3.5:1 the bike produced 12hp and was capable of 100kph.

The first production model was the Normale, which was produced from 1921-24. While similar to the "G.P." it had a simplified 2 valve head (side valve inlet & overhead exhaust). 8hp at 3,200rpm. 130kg. Top speed 85kph.

The museum consists of a series of long rooms.

Corsa C4V. The bike on which Guido Mentasti won the Championship of Europe in 1924. The C4V saw the return to a 4 valve head and proved to be very successful. 22hp at 5,500rpm. 130kg. Top speed 140kph.

The 500cc Gran Turismo was only made in small numbers (78 from 1928-30) and after a publicity ride to the Arctic Circle it was nicknamed the "Norge" (Norway). The main feature of the GT was the introduction of a sprung frame. 13hp. 150kg. Top speed 100kph.

The only surviving example of the 500cc Tre Cilindri of 1932. Derived from the 1930 500cc 4 cylinder race bike, the Tre Cilindri was highly advance touring bike for the time but the high price and average performance meant it wasn't a commercial success and it was discontinued after one year. 25hp at 5,500rpm. 160kg. Top speed 130kph. Photographed in Mandello del Lario, Italy. 2013.

20th Century Cycles is the culmination of Billy Joel's love of motorcycles and his passion for motorcycle design. Since, in his opinion, he believes that vintage motorcycles look better and, since he also is aware that modern motorcycles tend to work better, all of the bikes in the collection have been transformed in one way or another into rideable, practical machines with a nod toward the past. I generally dont post anything about bicycles but this one is really cool made by two young guys not so far from my hometown.
Above Workshop are two young (23 years)friends, from a training School of Architecture in Bordeaux who taught us a lot about how to complete a project. Passionate about the material, mechanics and all the beautiful things, we started to restore bicycles and motorcycles by adding our creative touch. What is important for us is this positioning that allows these bikes and motorcycles continue to persist even years, facing an era of disposable becomes increasingly ubiquitous today. These accomplishments can then be presented as reinterpretations rather than faithful restorations, which allows us to reflect on the modern needs of individuals and thus reinstate the "parts" in the news.
