Bernard H.V.42 Racing Seaplane

Built to compete in the 1931 Schneider Trophy the Bernard H.V.42 was a racing seaplane designed by   Société des Avions Bernard which unfortunately never raced due to engine trouble. This handed outright victory to the English Supermarine S6B as the Italian team was not ready in time, bring to an end one of the greatest mechanical competitions of modern times.

Thank you to the always excellent LE CONTAINER for the reminder about this amazing machine.

AC Aceca

The AC Aceca was a sports Coupé grand tourer produced by AC cars between 1954 and 1963. Sharing much with the open top AC Ace which was introduced a year earlier (and went on to form the basis of the famous Cobra), the Aceca was a particularly practical long distance machine with decent storage in the hatchback rear and good weather protection. In 1956 a 125bhp Bristol 2-litre powered version of the car appeared and was produced along side the AC OHC straight six, providing a much needed improvement in performance. This, together with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution and relatively light curb weight equated to a solid drivers car.

The example pictured here is very unusually in that it is fitted with a 289ci (4.7) Ford V8, Borg Warner T10 close-ratio manual gearbox and a Salisbury limited slip differential, effectively making for a closed Cobra and an interesting insight into what could have been. I particularly like this Aceca for its subtle colour combination making for a very under-the-radar vehicle but with performance and a noise to surprise a lot of competition, both contemporary and modern. Oh and bonus points for the Heuer Master Time and Auto Rallye attached to the dashboard.

Although not a true Baby PloProf (really the name should only applied to reference 166.0250, the 120m version) but the signature hands mean that the name is not inappropriate for this piece. A classic piece of dive watch design making for a unique and beautiful daily beater.

Vincent Comet in pieces

The above was a shot I set up of a Vincent Comet in pieces. Dismantled by the previous owner prior to restoration they unfortunately ran out of time. The parts were sold for a figure not far from what a complete machine sells for, proving that working on the motorcycle is as much fun as riding it to some owners.

Clearly visible is the Upper Frame Member oil tank in the centre of the shot and the Rear Frame Member in the top right, which make up the ingenious parts that connect everything to the engine of a Vincent. A beautiful piece of engineering by the two Phils (Irving and Vincent) which is all the clearer when the entire system is taken apart.

Despite being largely pieced together by pre-war components, the Talbot-Lago T26 raced for six years and took many victories. Most of these were taken with the striking T26C in Grand Prix, but the most remarkable achievement was an overall win at the 24 Hours of LeMans with a thinly disguised T26C.

The Brooks England Challenge Tool Bag has buckles that fasten the bag to a bicycle saddle, these buckles are located within the bag itself, which ensures greater levels of security.
